PSP Movies
PSP Movies come in two forms - MPEG 4 files that are written to memory sticks via the USB cable, and UMD Movies that are purchased or rented.
Making Movies for the PSP
If you want to make movies for the PSP, then you'll need two things. One, you'll have to get a PSP Memory Stick, which is actually a Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo. There are a number of sizes of PSP memory sticks, ranging from the 32mb card which comes with your PSP up to 1 GB and soon, 2 GB and beyond. You will also need a USB cable, and software to make MPEG 4 movies. You've come to the right place for all the links to this stuff. Read on!
Memory Stick Pro Duo Reviews
In order to put games, movies, music, pictures and more on your PSP, you will need a Memory Stick Pro Duo. This is a different product than the Memory Stick Pro. The Memory Stick Pro Duo is a smaller card. It does not have the same interface as the Pro. You should not buy any memory stick card without making sure it is the Pro Duo.
At the time of this article, there are three major manufacturers of Memory Stick Pro Duo. They are Lexar, SanDisk and, of course, Sony. The following table gives model numbers and approximate costs for sticks that are at least 256 MB. You should not purchase sticks smaller than 256 MB. You can find out why below.

What is the Memory Stick Pro Duo High Speed? - The High Speed version of the Memory Stick Pro Duo is just that - it has a higher transfer rate than the standard Pro Duo card. Movies will not play better with a high speed card, but they will transfer faster to your PSP if you have a USB 2.0 port on your computer.
What brand of Memory Stick Pro Duo Should I Buy? - There have been a number of reports that the SanDisk cards have inconsistent performance in the Sony PSP. Some people say that after some use, the card craps out and can no longer be read by the PSP. Some people say that they work perfectly. If it does not work, you should have no problem taking the card back to the store and getting another one. If you do not want to risk it, just by the Sony brand.
Is there a difference between the SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo and the SanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo Gaming cards? - As far as everyone agrees right now, there is no difference between the Gaming card and the normal card, except the Gaming card is see through and colored - oh and it costs more money too.
Why does my memory stick show less disk space than what it says on the package? - Keep in mind that formatting and the way that companies report memory size versus the way a PC reports memory size may vary. Follow this quick table to determine how much actual space you'll get out of your card.

DVD to PSP
If you're interested in converting a DVD to PSP, then what you'll need to get is converter software that supports the MPEG 4 codec. The most popular program is PSP Video 9 (link below). There are a few other programs out there, but none yet compare to PSP Video 9 for ease of use. In addition to the software, you will need a USB Cable. The cheapest way to get a cable that will work for the PSP is to check the USB cables you already have. The cable comes standard with plenty of digital cameras and other usb devices. The type of cable you need is caalled a USB mini-b cable. Many times you can find this cable as part of a larger overall kit, which might work better for you if you want some UMD cases, an external PSP battery, etc.
Where can I get a USB Cable for my PSP? - They are all over the place, and typically you'll pay about $10. Try these links and buy them through Amazon.com:
Of course, you will also need a memory stick. Read Memory Stick Pro Duo Reviews above.
PSP Video 9 Tips
If you want to turn your existing DVDs into PSP movies, then you're going to have to use PSP Video 9. Here's a list of tips for PSP Video 9 that should help you. If you don't have PSP Video 9 yet, you can download it here.
Widescreen Movies for PSP - If you are converting a 16:9 DVD to PSP MPEG 4, you should go set up your own video profile in PSP Video 9. Here's how you do that:
- Choose the Setup Button in the top left of the PSP Video 9 screen.
- Click the Profiles tab
- Click the New Profile button
- To be able to fit four movies at a decent quality on a 1GB Memory Stick, or two movies on a 512MB Memory Stick, then you'll want these settings:
- Video: 240x176
- Framerate: 29.97 fps
- Bitrate: Constant 128 kbps
- Audio Bitrate: 32 kbps
- Channels: Mono
- Sample Rate: 24000 kHZ
- Volume: 150% or more
How many movies can I fit on a Memory Stick? - That depends. On a 32MB memory stick, you can fit clips, and you certainly can fit TV Shows. Look at the Profile Picker in the setup to determine how many minutes you can fit on your memory card. A 256 MB card might fit one movie with watchable quality. It will not fit a higher resolution version of the movie. A 512 MB card will probably fit two movies at watchable resolution and mono sound. It will fit one higher resolution movie. Obviously, a gigabyte card just about doubles the 512 MB card. Each movie is different, and you can't go just on the Profile Picker estimates. You should not waste money on cards smaller than 512MB, and if you can afford it, get larger.
Increasing the Volume on PSP Video 9 Movies - If you've ever travelled in an airplane and you had converted some DVDs to watch, you probably found that it's very difficult to hear the movie using standard headphones. I bought the Bose QC-1 Quiet Comfort Acoustic Noise Canceling Headset , so I will no longer have this problem. If you don't want to shell out the money for those headphones, find some headphones that cover your entire ear, and make sure that you increase the volume in PSP Video 9 all the way up.
PSP Movie Downloads
If you're looking to download movies for the PSP, you should remember that pirating movies is illegal. It is questionable even to make backup copies of movies you already own. With that said, you may find legal clips and legal movies to watch on Bit Torrent sites or by using software that connects to the Gnuttella network. You should definitely check out Shareaza if this is the what you're looking for. Shareaza is freeware and does not contain ads or spyware, unlike many of the "aza" programs out there.
